Officer-Involved Shooting on Honeygrove Road
On June 4, 2025, at approximately 8:41 a.m., the Virginia Beach Emergency Communications and Citizen Services (ECCS) received a call regarding an individual who had pointed a firearm at the complainant in the 4600 block of Honeygrove Rd.
Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) officers responded to the scene and located the suspect, later identified as Shaun Marlar (M/18) of Virginia Beach who was armed with a handgun. Officers gave commands for Marlar to drop the weapon; instead, he pointed the pistol at the officers who were forced to discharge their firearms, striking the suspect. Marlar was transported to a local hospital where he is in critical but stable condition.
A replica handgun was recovered at the scene. Marlar has been currently charged with Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer (two counts) and Brandishing (three counts). The involved officers were uninjured and have been placed on temporary Critical Incident Leave, which is standard policy.
The VBPD Detective Bureau is conducting one of two criminal investigations into this incident. Upon completion, all evidence obtained by VBPD will be submitted to the Virginia Beach Office of the Commonwealth Attorney (OCA) who will review the facts and circumstances for compliance with law.
The OCA will conduct their own parallel, independent criminal investigation. Upon conclusion of both criminal investigations, the VBPD Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an administrative review to determine compliance with department policy, procedure, and training.
Anyone with information relating to this case is asked to contact the VBPD Detective Bureau at 757-385-4101 or Crime Solvers at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or P3Tips.com. Â
