First Public Sprayground in Virginia Beach Opens May 30

A new way to beat the heat is coming soon to Virginia Beach, with the opening of the city’s first public sprayground at Level Green Park.

The first chance for kids to get sprayed, splashed and soaked will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, during the official opening event for the park. 

The sprayground is part of a multi-million-dollar upgrade to Level Green Park that took place in 2025. Other new features include two off-leash dog parks, outdoor fitness equipment, new trails, a rentable picnic shelter, updated basketball courts, an updated playground and new restrooms. A future wildflower meadow is also planned, which will feature a mix of native flowers and trees. 

The Community Day is 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on May 30 and will also include inflatables, chalk art, giant games, free snacks and water and a DJ. The first visitors will have a chance to snag a limited-edition towel featuring Barks & Rex, the Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation (VBPR) department mascots. At 11 a.m., speakers including Virginia Beach Mayor Robert M. “Bobby” Dyer, District 7 Councilmember Cal “Cash” Jackson-Greene, and Parks & Recreation Director Michael Kirschman will kick off the day’s events.  

FitPop, another of VBPR’s new initiatives, will also help mark the opening of the park. The FitPop team hosts free community fitness and wellness classes at parks all over the city, and on May 30, free activities include a line dancing class, a circuit training class using the outdoor gym equipment, and a “nature bathing” walk along the trails. 

This opening event will also act as a preview of Parks After Dark, as Level Green Park will be one of three locations where the summer events will be held. Starting on June 11, Parks After Dark will provide free activities including pop-up sports, movie nights and community resources, as well as free food. Parks After Dark is held each week June 11-Aug. 22, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 6-10 p.m. Parks After Dark is free for everyone to attend, and the sprayground will be open. 

The sprayground is scheduled to open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day, whenever the air temperature is at least 75 degrees. It is open to all ages. Children 8 and younger must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
