Volunteers Give Over 800,000 Hours in Virginia Beach in FY 2024
Recognizing the thousands of volunteers who donate their time and talents to the City of Virginia Beach during National Volunteer Week, April 20-26.

City of Virginia Beach volunteers are dedicated individuals who help to keep City services vibrant and intact. They perform all kinds of jobs at various City locations, from providing guided tours and educating visitors at one of our history museums to assisting staff and kids in Parks & Recreation’s Out-of-School Time Programs. Â
Volunteer Service for FY24 Â
As part of National Volunteer Week (and month), the City of Virginia Beach would like to thank the 10,156 people who volunteered in FY24. Those volunteers served 840,295 hours, which equates to $28.1 million of valuable service – the equivalent of a 3.8-cent savings on the real estate tax rate.  Â
Some highlights for FY24 include: Â
- 1,132 Emergency Medical Services volunteers served 266,760 hours to help save lives.Â
- 12 weeks of classes are now available for parents of children in the Virginia Beach Early Intervention Infant Program, up from eight weeks previously, because of the help of volunteers. Â
- 1,000+ volunteers cleaned beaches and waterways during Parks & Recreation’s Clean the Bay Day, the largest episodic volunteer program in Virginia Beach.Â
- 3,316 children from 72 schools and programs attended Fun on the Farm field trips at the Rural Heritage Center, managed by volunteers. Â
- 51,182 hours were contributed by 1,014 volunteers at the Virginia Aquarium.Â
The Office of Volunteer Resources’ annual report for FY24 provides even more statistical data on the value volunteerism brings to the City of Virginia Beach. Â
Founded in 1978, the City of Virginia Beach Office of Volunteer Resources and its volunteer program celebrates its 47th anniversary in 2025. The continued success of this program can be attributed to strong advocacy of volunteerism from leadership, talented volunteer resource managers, and the thousands of residents who dedicate their time to our organization. Â
