Top Five Reasons Job Seekers Should Attend the City of Virginia Beach Career Fair

Oct. 15 Career Fair offers an opportunity to speak with many City departments and get answers to job-related questions.

Job seekers are invited to attend the City of Virginia Beach’s third annual Career Fair from noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Hosted on the second floor of the Virginia Beach Convention Center, 1000 19th St., the Career Fair is a once-a-year opportunity to meet with representatives from as many as 17 City departments.

These are the top five reasons why local job seekers should attend:

Talk with representatives from many City departments

When navigating the job search process, it isn’t always clear which departments might be the best fit. Having so many City representatives together in one place allows job seekers to ask questions and identify the departments that are the right match for their interest and skills.

Have an informal conversation about the job

The Career Fair offers prospective employees an opportunity to chat about career goals and the department’s current hiring needs. At last year’s Career Fair, Kevin Stocks first spoke with representatives in Information Technology, which seemed like the best fit for him. He ended up interviewing for and accepting a job in Finance. “Going to the Career Fair made it a lot easier to talk to someone, explain my background, and get immediate direction about who to talk to next,” Stocks said.

Learn more about specific City teams

An important aspect of any job search is understanding workplace culture. Meeting City employees in person at the Career Fair can give helpful insight about the dynamics of a specific team.

The Career Fair only happens once a year

All year long, City recruiters host a virtual Q & A and attend various hiring events throughout the region (announced on LinkedIn). But the Career Fair is the only time so many City departments come together at the same hiring event. This year three departments are offering on-the-spot job interviews.

It's easy to pre-register and attend

The Career Fair is open to the public and free of charge, including free parking. Registration is not required. However, job seekers planning to attend are encouraged to pre-register.
