Strawberries Are Ripe and Ready for the Picking

Here’s where to find local farms and a jamboree celebrating spring’s favorite fruit.

Basket full of strawberries

As spring hits its stride, one bright red sign of the season is taking over local farm fields: strawberries! Virginia Beach continues to lead the way as the state’s top strawberry-growing region. Strawberries love well-drained soil and full sun, both of which Virginia Beach offers in abundance.

A single cup of strawberries packs over 100% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C, plus antioxidants and fiber. That makes them a healthy favorite for snacking, baking, smoothies and salads.

Local farms are bursting with flavor

Support Virginia’s local farms and pick your own straight from the fields. Many farms also offer pre-picked options, but availability can change with the weather. It's always a good idea to call ahead for field conditions and hours. Check out the Virginia Beach Strawberry Guide for the best spots to pick or purchase berries before the season wraps up!

Mark your calendar for the Strawberry Jamboree!

The Virginia Beach Farmers Market is hosting its annual Strawberry Jamboree from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 10. The family-friendly event features:

  • The Butterfly Society of Virginia's pollinator plant sale
  • Vendors with a variety of items such as art, baked goods, pet treats, leather goods, jewelry and more.
  • The tree trail walk with the Virginia Beach Master Gardeners
  • Food trucks, children's activities and music
