Shaping Virginia Beach’s Coastal Future Together

See what residents shared in recent public meetings and stay involved as the study moves forward.

In late January, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the City of Virginia Beach hosted five public meetings to gather feedback on the Coastal Storm Risk Management (CSRM) Feasibility Study

More than 80 residents participated, sharing questions and concerns about timelines, funding, project design and community impacts. That input will help guide the next phases of the study as potential storm risk reduction solutions continue to be evaluated.

Key Takeaways

  • Construction timelines will depend on future authorization and funding by Congress.
  • The recent funding update to the Flood Protection Program's Mega Bundle project did not affect CSRM funding, as the two are completely separate initiatives.
  • Cost estimates for proposed alignments are still under development.
  • Raising Sandbridge Road was removed from the options because of environmental impacts, and a floodwall option is under consideration.
  • Resident concerns included potential impacts to oceanfront views from elevated walkways.
  • The study is ongoing, with the final report scheduled for May 2028.

Why Your Feedback Matters

Launched in 2022, the CSRM Feasibility Study is examining coastal storm risks facing Virginia Beach today and in the future, including sea-level change. Public feedback plays a critical role in shaping and refining potential solutions before a preferred plan is recommended.

The in-person meetings included presentation materials displayed on boards that can be viewed online at the project webpage. To see a recording of the presentation given at the virtual meetings, visit the USACE’s YouTube webinar.

Residents are encouraged to stay involved as the study continues. Project updates and additional information can be found on the USACE CSRM project page. Stay tuned for future public engagement opportunities!
