ReadyVB: Virginia Beach’s New Mascot Teaches Kids, Families About Emergency Preparedness

It’s important for everyone to know how to prepare for emergencies, and now Virginia Beach Emergency Management has a new assistant in teaching children and families what they can do to stay safe.  

Knight Periwinkle van der Storm

Knight Periwinkle van der Storm, a fictional character mascot, embodies the ideals of helpfulness, protection and preparation while encouraging children to work with their families on basic tasks such as building an emergency kit and making a plan. 

Emergency Management incorporates Knight Periwinkle activities into its presentations to youth and at community event tables, as well as in new webpages and social media. 

On the new webpage, kids and families can read “The Legend of Knight Periwinkle van der Storm” and find out why the hero came to Virginia Beach.  

On the activities page, kids and families can learn important words about emergencies, download coloring sheets and a papercraft, as well as find resources for families on making a plan, signing up for VB Alerts and preparing for hazards.
