Jumping into the Right Job: David’s Journey to Independence
Virginia Beach Human Services’ program helps residents with disabilities achieve independence, confidence and financial stability.

Walking into a trampoline park can be overwhelming for some, but Virginia Beach resident David thrives in the chaos and joyfully engages with children of all ages. As the safety officer on duty, he vigilantly ensures everyone — children and parents alike — follows the rules for a safe and fun experience.
When he’s called to the rock-climbing area, David makes his way there, picking up a piece of trash along the way. He warmly greets two girls by name and expertly assists them in putting on their harnesses. He clips them into the repelling pulley, showcasing his dedication to safety. A parent approaches him to express gratitude for his hard work, reinforcing the impact David has on others.
David’s Journey
David connected with his job through the Virginia Beach Department of Human Services’ Community Employment Options (CEO) program, a highly tailored program for people with disabilities that matches their skills and interests to positions in which they could be successful. CEO employment specialists provide job applicants with one-on-one assistance such as helping with skill acquisition, setting up task schedules and facilitating their integration within the culture of the job.
David was referred to the CEO program by the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS). Inspired by a friend's positive experience, he began his adult services journey at the Wilson Workforce and Rehabilitation Center, where he gained valuable work readiness training and attended driving school.
David says the initial assessment helped him explore various job opportunities and find his passions and strengths. He loves working with kids and he finds joy in diverse environments. With much appreciated support from his employment specialist, David navigated his job search until he jumped into the ideal position.
A Bright Future
David appreciates the ongoing encouragement he receives from his employment specialist, especially when he feels nervous. Suggestions for enhancing his job performance and fostering independence motivate him to grow. David focuses on supported employment, expressing deep love for his church and his relationship with Jesus. He looks forward to a bright future, with dreams of owning his own home someday where he and his dogs can live happily.
