The weeklong observance celebrates EMS professionals who serve their communities with skill and compassion.

National EMS Week, May 17-23, recognizes the emergency medical services (EMS) profession and its importance in protecting the safety and health of the public. Annually, Virginia Beach EMS (VBEMS) curates a variety of activities during the week as a show of appreciation and support for volunteer and career members.

This year’s national theme — “Improving Outcomes, Together” — is an appropriate sentiment for this department, because its core values include collaboration, community and caring for all with compassion, respect and kindness.

Serving Virginia Beach

Every year, EMS calls for service increase, and our providers continue to excel in providing compassionate care to patients every day.

  • 57,907 total calls for service in 2025, a 1.9% increase.
  • 40,389 ambulance transports to hospitals, a 2.0% increase.
  • 12,548 Advanced Life Support (ALS) Transports.
  • 27,841 Basic Life Support (BLS) Transports.

“Our EMS members contribute many countless hours of passionate service and perform incredible work every single day,” EMS Chief Jason Stroud said. “EMS Week recognizes our extraordinary system and those who answer hundreds of calls for help every day with skill and compassion. Our providers deserve recognition not just this week but every day.”

Spread the Word

Residents interested in joining our system do not need to have a medical background. In fact, that’s what makes VBEMS unique — its members come from all backgrounds and professions. EMS Week is another way for the department to spread the word about how volunteer and career members are the strength of our system.

EMS is an award-winning third-service agency that answers more than 58,000 calls for service annually. Through VB Rescue, EMS uses a combined career-volunteer workforce. Learn more about EMS by visiting EMS.VirginiaBeach.gov. You can also contact Virginia Beach EMS at vbems@vbgov.com.
