City of Virginia Beach Named Among Top Employers for Interns in Virginia
City’s internship program receives award for fourth time.
The City of Virginia Beach is one of the 161 top employers for interns in the Commonwealth for 2026, according to a recent announcement from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV).
The annual SCHEV recognition highlights an array of employers that provide high-quality internships, connecting student interns with opportunities to gain hands-on training, mentoring and marketable skills. The City has received the distinction each consecutive year since the 2023 unification of its internship program.
City Internships
In the past fiscal year, Virginia Beach engaged 51 students in internships across 12 departments, including Agriculture, Public Works, Fire, Parks & Recreation, Public Utilities, Human Resources, Information Technology, Economic Development, Budget & Management Services, Convention & Visitors Bureau, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Communications.
Virginia Beach draws interns from Hampton Roads-area schools and partners with most in-state colleges and universities to offer internships. Active-duty service members have a similar opportunity to gain professional experience through the SkillBridge program.
An IT systems analyst intern noted kind coworkers, participating in meetings and insights gained from working on projects among their internship highlights.
“Virginia’s competitive advantage is our talent pipeline,” said Scott Fleming, SCHEV’s executive director, in the announcement. “The employers recognized this year are turning learning into experience and expanding the talent pipeline Virginia needs.”
Virginia Beach will be honored among SCHEV’s award recipients during a ceremony on July 30, Virginia Intern Day.
Opportunities
The City of Virginia Beach’s award-winning internship program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to apply knowledge from their field of study in a professional environment. Depending on positions available, some interns may even be hired as full-time employees.
Students enrolled in a college/university are invited to learn more about the program and check out current opportunities.
