Army Corps to Begin Geotechnical Work Along the Bayfront Beaches

Residents and visitors along the Chesapeake Bay shoreline can expect increased activity on the beach beginning the week of Sept. 8 as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers launches geotechnical drilling work tied to the Coastal Storm Risk Management study. Crews will conduct borings from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel to Fort Story and within the right-of-way near the 4300 block of Sandy Bay Drive.

What to Expect

The Corps plans to mobilize equipment on Sept. 8 and begin on Sept. 9, with work expected to last about six weeks, weather permitting. Operations will run Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Beachgoers should expect to see a four-wheeler and a tracked drill rig on the sand, along with temporary closures of about a 25-by-50-foot section of beach each day. Please avoid any coned or flagged zones.

Beach access for the crews will occur at Fentress Avenue, the Lynnhaven Boat Ramp and Jade Street, with each access event lasting up to an hour. The Corps is also expected to conduct in-water borings on the north side of the Lesner Bridge beginning in October.
