Virginia Beach Seeking Artists to Create Installations at Sports Center Complex

Virginia Beach Seeking Artists to Create Installations at Sports Center Complex
May 24, 2021

Attention artists! The Virginia Beach Cultural Affairs Department, in partnership with the Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau, seeks to commission a professional artist to create a series of sculptures that will be placed on the grounds outside of the new Virginia Beach Sports Center.

These vibrant installations will be a welcoming beacon to the Sports Center, as well as a gateway to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront and ViBe Creative District.

Virginia Beach is looking to commission pieces that are family friendly, will be the source of countless, exciting "selfie" moments to engage residents and visitors alike, and will be highly visible both day and night! Artists should keep in mind that this is a very highly trafficked location, and hosts many different types of guests, including student athletes, families, residents, game day attendees and local pedestrian traffic.

The sculptural installations will be placed at four designated sites along the 17th Street and Jefferson Avenue sides of the Sports Center complex. Interested artists can view installation options and examples in the application at the link below.

ABOUT THE CITY OF VIRGINIA BEACH SPORTS CENTER
With 285,000 square feet of space, including 12 basketball courts, 24 volleyball courts, a 200 meter, hydraulically banked track, seating for 5,000 spectators and more, there's so much to discover at our new Sports Center. The new venue is located across the street from the Virginia Beach Convention Center and just steps away from local shops, restaurants, and attractions, including the beautiful boardwalk and beaches of the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The Sports Center's convertible courts and multifunctional spaces make the site the first of its kind on the East Coast not housed on a college or university campus. Its positioning within a day's drive of two-thirds of the United States adds to the City's demand as a year- round destination of choice. This next generation venue is where athletes and fans will create memories and welcomed experiences that last well beyond the game. The purpose is to support sports tourism which has an impact to local hotels, business, restaurants, and Virginia Beach citizens.
