Today, the Center for Digital Government revealed the winners of its 2021 Digital Cities Survey. Virginia Beach achieved a third-place victory, clinching a spot among the top 3 cities in the 250K-499K population category for the fifth year in a row. The Digital Cities Survey is an annual ranking that measures how cities are employing technology to improve services, engage communities, address social issues and more.

"Innovative cities are able to leverage data and harness new technology to enhance the services they provide," said CDG Vice President Phil Bertolini. "The Center for Digital Government congratulates this year's winners for putting technology to good use toward improving the lives of constituents and strengthening the relationships they have with their partners."

The City implemented several changes in response to the pandemic, remaining agile and attuned to opportunities to further modernize government-citizen interaction and support employee productivity. Some of these highly touted initiatives include:

  • Hiring the City's first chief performance officer to establish performance metrics for City services
  • Promoting the City's chief information officer position to directly report to the City Manager
  • Updating infrastructure and expanding broadband services
  • Advancing data-driven decision-making across the City
  • Launching a new customer relationship management system that integrates 311

"Our City leadership has made digital transformation a top priority for the entire organization," said Peter Wallace, the City's chief information officer. "This commitment to serving citizens through the power of technology evolves each year. Despite the challenges we've faced, our talented workforce continues to meet technological advancements with innovation and ingenuity. We're staying connected to key trends in the public and private sectors to help elevate our services."

Virginia Beach, along with the top 10 cities in each population category, will be honored Dec. 8 during the Digital Cities Survey Awards and Workshop. The event will only be open to the public sector. More information is available here.
