VB Home Now Awards Nearly $140,000 in Grants to Virginia Beach Housing and Neighborhood Preservation and Local Organizations to Assist Families and Individuals Experiencing Homelessness or a Housing Crisis
VB Home Now recently awarded Virginia Beach Housing and Neighborhood Preservation a $110,000 grant to support programs that make homelessness rare, brief, and nonrecurring for families and individuals in Virginia Beach. The funds are intended to assist people experiencing homelessness or a housing crisis to help them obtain or sustain housing by providing financial assistance for rent, utility and security deposits, rental arrears, and emergency housing fees.
"As we've seen during this pandemic, one unforeseen crisis, loss of employment, or serious illness can snowball into a series of other issues and potentially lead to homelessness, especially for those living paycheck to paycheck," said Andrew Friedman, director of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation. "The VB Home Now grant comes at a critical time for the most vulnerable members of our community and allows us to continue and enhance our efforts to help families and individuals get out of homelessness and remain stably housed."
VB Home Now is a nonprofit foundation that supports and enhances the community system of services, programs, and facilities to prevent and end homelessness in Virginia Beach. In addition to the Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation, the foundation awarded an additional $29,800 to four other local organizations that serve the homeless:
- $14,000 to the Virginia Beach Education Foundation for its Beach Bags program, which provides homeless students with shelf-stable foods for weekends and breaks during the school year
- $7,000 to the Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation (VBCDC) to provide utility and transportation assistance for residents of Cedar Grove Apartments, VBCDC's affordable rental community exclusively for disabled and/or homeless veterans
- $6,000 to Virginia Supportive Housing (VSH) to provide emergency rent assistance in the event of job loss or income reduction during the pandemic for residents of Crescent Square Apartments, VSH's mixed-income community that serves individuals who are formerly homeless or with low income
- $2,800 to Virginia Beach Library Foundation for 50 Connection Kits at the Virginia Beach Public Library's Oceanfront Area Library, which provide individuals experiencing homelessness with a cache of resource materials directing them to a wide range of mental, physical and behavioral health services, as well as hygiene and safety products
