*UpdateThe decedent has been identified as ​53-year-old William Parker Jenkins Jr of Virginia Beach.On June 18th, 2020 at 12:22 pm, Virginia Beach Emergency Communications received a report of a possible drowning that was occurring approximately 2 miles off shore from the oceanfront.The preliminary investigation has indicated that a fishing charter boat was underway when the boat operator jumped in the water to try and free a sea turtle that appeared entangled by a rope. While in the water, he began to struggle. This was observed by others on the boat, who called 911 and entered the water to offer assistance. VBPD Marine Patrol Units responded and were able to pull the victim onto their vessel and initiate CPR. VBFD and EMS also responded and provided further assistance.The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.This is being investigated by the Virginia Beach Police Department, who is in communication with the USCG.No further details are available at this time.MPO Linda J KuehnVirginia Beach Police / Public Affairs Officer
