Public Meeting on Citywide Flood Protection Program Set for Sept. 30
The City of Virginia Beach is hosting the first in-person public meeting to provide information to residents about the Flood Protection Program bond referendum that is on the current General Election ballot. The meeting takes place on Thursday, Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. in Bldg. 19 at the Municipal Center, 2416 Courthouse Drive.
Residents have the opportunity to vote on the Flood Protection Program bond referendum to determine whether the City Council should fund the design and construction of $567.5 million worth of flood protection projects included in Phase 1 of the program.
The referendum funding will allow the City to accelerate flood protection projects currently underway and expand to include several new projects. Phase 1 consists of 21 projects that will be built over 10 years, which is much sooner than the current schedule. To fund the projects, the real estate tax rate increase would be between 4.3 and 6.4 cents per $100 of a property's assessed value. Based on the median home assessment value of $267,600, that translates into a cost of $10 to $14 more per month, or $115 to $171 more per year.
"This is one of the most important initiatives for the City and it will have a major impact for generations to come," said Mayor Robert M. "Bobby" Dyer. "We want to ensure that citizens have all the information they need to make an informed decision."
City staff will be on hand to provide details on the Phase 1 projects and to answer questions. More public meetings, both virtual and in-person, are planned in the coming weeks.
