Homicide Suspect Arrested in Oxford, North Carolina

​VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – On August 17, 2021 at 6:28 p.m. Virginia Beach Emergency Communications (VBECCS) received a report that a man had been shot in the 500 block of Elm Grove Court.

VBPD Officers and VBEMS responded to the scene and located an adult male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene. The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Marquis Lamont Alston of Virginia Beach.

The preliminary investigation indicated this was a domestic related incident, the suspect and victim were known to each other. The suspect gained access to the residence and discharged a firearm, fatally striking the victim. The suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival.

The suspect was quickly identified as 32-year-old Jamel Isaiah Thorogood of Virginia Beach. Warrants were obtained for murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. VBPD investigators, in cooperation with VBPD Warrant Fugitive Officers, immediately began gathering information to determine his whereabouts. On August 19, 2021 the suspect was located in Oxford, North Carolina. The Granville County Sheriff's Office assisted with taking Thorogood into custody, without incident. Jamel Thorogood is currently being held by the Granville County Sheriffs Department, awaiting extradition back to Virginia Beach.

This case remains under investigation by members of the VBPD homicide Unit.
