Animal Laws During the Season

Animal Laws During the Season
May 21, 2020

Virginia Beach Animal Control is preparing for the start of the "season" and the changes in laws regarding the sand beaches and board walk that begin at 6:00 pm on Friday May 22, 2020 and last through 6:00 pm on Monday September 7, 2020. As a reminder no animals are allowed on the sand beach or the boardwalk from Rudee Inlet through 42nd St at any time of the day, with the exception of leashed dogs being allowed on the boardwalk only between the hours of 6:00 am and 10:00 am. Any animals on Atlantic Ave, or in the parks and connector streets between Atlantic Ave and the boardwalk between Rudee Inlet and 42nd St must be in an escape proof container unless the animal is a dog, which must be on a leash. On all other sand beaches dogs are not permitted on the beaches between the hours of 10:00 am and 6:00 pm. If you bring your dog to the beach you are required to clean up any waste from your animal as well as have a container on your person by which to do so. Guide, hearing, and/or service dogs trained to and in the company a person with a disability are exempt from all sections of the code with the exception of the requirement to clean up any waste from their dog. Animal Control Officers will be patrolling the boardwalk and sand beaches of the city starting Friday May 22, 2020. Enforcement action will be taken for anyone found to be in violation of the code.
