Virginia Beach Named Among 2021 Smart 50 Award Recipients

The City’s Traffic Data-Sharing Partnership paves the way for global honor

The City has won a 2021 Smart 50 Award for its Traffic Data-Sharing Partnership with Waze. The annual award program recognizes 50 of the world's most transformational and influential projects based on current or future municipal-scale impact.

"This global acknowledgement affirms the value of designing and delivering safer ways for citizens to experience Virginia Beach," said Peter Wallace, the City's chief information officer. "We are focused on building up our capacity for data-driven innovation, and community engagement is a key pillar of our strategy."

Through the Traffic Data-Sharing Partnership, the City shares real-time, crowd-sourced information to offer a holistic view of current road conditions via the Waze app. Such data empowers users to choose the most effective routes and supports a better driving experience while helping City officials respond to traffic and weather-related incidents. The initiative continues to expand with new data and app integrations.

The City will be honored along with the other winners during the Smart 50 Awards Gala in Washington, D.C. this October. The ceremony will be co-located with the Smart Cities Connect Conference. Official details will be announced in June.
