VBPD Releases New Recruiting Video to Attract Recruits of the Highest Caliber and Integrity

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Over the past year, the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) has made process improvements and incorporated new technology to recruit talented men and women who are motivated to earn the department's badge.

These improvements are included in an updated VBPD recruiting video, "2021 How to Apply to the Virginia Beach Police Department - YouTube", which is being launched to attract recruits. The updated video provides detailed information explaining the recruiting and six-month training process to earn the right to wear the badge of a sworn officer.

"We are dedicated to hiring recruits with character and integrity to develop into leaders who are called to protect and serve," said Master Police Officer (MPO) Stephen Policella, who is a member of the VBPD Recruiting Team responsible for recruiting the best and brightest.

Currently the Virginia Beach Police Department has authorized 813 sworn positions. The recent voting and approval of the City of Virginia Beach's budget will serve to attract new recruits and retain its sworn officer base. In May, the City of Virginia Beach approved the department's 8.5 percent pay raise for sworn officers; as well as announced it will provide an additional $1.2 million for college and longevity incentive pay for sworn officers; and pay range minimums and maximums will increase by 5.5 percent.

To maintain its high caliber, the department also has continued to achieve the highest standard in policing by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. Established in 1979, CALEA is an international certification for public safety agencies and requires organizations such as law enforcement, to benchmark and report on 483 standards to achieve accreditation.

"The Virginia Beach Police Department has maintained this accreditation," said Policella. "This is a distinction that only one percent of law enforcement agencies achieve in the nation."

The VBPD's process improvement changes have enabled the department to attract recruits for the upcoming July academy and are expected to fill all 60 seats available. The department is currently scheduling potential recruits for their February 2022 academy class.
