Some Officers May Be Sporting a Different Look Soon...

Some of our officers may look a little different in the coming weeks…by sporting a beard!  Chief Neudigate has only been in charge for a couple of weeks and is following through with an early pledge to provide a fresh perspective and to keep an open mind. He has had an opportunity to have numerous discussions with department members; and after listening to the workforce, has decided to temporarily shed the current grooming policy that restricts facial hair for a trial period that goes into effect this Sunday, November 8 , 2020.  Departments across the country are adapting to changing norms and facial hair for public service agencies has become more accepted. The Virginia Beach Police Department believes this small change could promote respectful, interpersonal communication with members of our community while increasing morale within the agency. At the end of the trial period, the policy will be reevaluated to determine if it needs modification, or if it will be amended permanently, so please feel free to reach out to us via email at or social media to let us know your thoughts. Even though this modification only applies to certain members, the Chief has authorized the creation of a Process Improvement Team to look at current grooming standards on behalf of all employees to see if there are additional changes that should be considered.
