Library Launches “Stork Storytime” for Expecting Parents

Virginia Beach Public Library (VBPL) has long offered storytime classes for children from ages 6 months to 5 years, helping build skills to prepare them for success in school and beyond. Now, VBPL is offering "Stork Storytime," a workshop to help expecting parents prepare for their roles as their children's first teachers. The first session will be held live, online via the library's WebEx platform, Saturday, Jan. 23, from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Registration is required. "Parents are a child's first and best teacher for early literacy skill-building and language development," said Katie Cerqua, youth and family services manager at VBPL. "These important early literacy habits can begin before the baby is even born." Cerqua says during the third trimester, babies may react to noises outside the mother's body and be soothed by the sound of her voice. "Simple practices, such as singing songs aloud during the day and establishing a time when everyone can pause and read aloud for five minutes, can make a difference." During Stork Storytime, expecting parents will learn these and other tips to help them develop confidence and skills to create a daily reading routine before their babies arrive. As part of the program, parents who complete 20 "read aloud" activities will also have a chance to select and add a new board book to their baby's collection, thanks to funding from the Friends of Virginia Beach Public Library. Register now for Stork Storytime at www.VBgov.com/library-events.
